IT'S MUSIC POST TIME!!
1. You Are A Casino by Snowman (http://www.myspace.com/thesnowmanempir e)
I've posted about Snowman before but I feel the need to share them again. I saw them live for the second time in February and they are ... unique. The lead singer is amazing! He screams, he sings, he dances - he really feels his songs. Snowman are psychotic, versatile, gothic, and indescribable. It's so exciting to see such a unique band actually getting some air time. I recommend checking out the clip as well - so simple but it suits the frantic style so well!
Like this? Try The Last Train Outta Town and Shake Your Brains.
2. Heart's A Mess by Gotye (http://www.myspace.com/gotye)
I'd always been a bit dubious of this guy. My hand to god, this song was on EVERY morning on the exact time my radio alarm would turn on. So at first, this song was associated with waking up, and once you listen to it you can understand that it tripped me out a bit first thing in the morning :) It eventually grew on me and I wanted to buy the album. I then saw the video clip and went out the next day to buy the album.
Words can not express how much I adore this song, and this clip.
Gotye is an artist, not a band. His name is Wally and he made his entire album on his home computer. It's amazing and magical and haunting. One of the most amazing artists to come out of Australia in a long, long time.
Like this? Try The Only Way (completely different, has a middle eastern feel), Learnalilgivinlovin and A Distinctive Sound (again, completely different, no lyrics per se, all samples)
3. Myth Takes by !!! (chkchkchk)
!!! (pronounced "chkchkchk") seem to be the indie band of the moment. I don't care, I love them - if only for this song. Download and just TRY to resist it's sexy beat and husky lyrics.
Like this? Try Must Be The Moon and All My Heroes Are Weirdos.
4. The Truth About Cats And Dogs (Is That They Die) by Pony Up!
This is the only song I know by Pony Up! but it's hard not to love it. There's nothing exceptionally fantastic about it - it's a simple pop rock song - but it does everything right. I could listen to it on repeat for an hour! In fact, I think I have :)
5. Bubble In The Bottle (feat. Khan & Snax) by International Pony
I haven't listened to much else by this band and I didn't like this song at all when I first heard it ... but it's hypnotising. There's something about the vocals that's enticing.
6. Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken by Camera Obscura
This song is so sweet and the vocals are gorgeous. Camera Obscura has a sound reminiscent of something from the 70s - there's a purity about them.
Like this? Try If Looks Could Kill.
7. Bump by Spank Rock
Okay, I'm really not into songs about sex. As in the songs you'd see on the top 40 count down - shaking your booty and all that. But damn it, I love this song. The syncoptation, the beat, even the inane lyrics all ad up to make one dang groovy song. I also saw Spank Rock live and he was pretty awesome (considering I'm not into that kinda music). Just realised that this song reminds be of "Can't Touch This" ... c'mon you know it must be good :)
8. My Velocity by Maxïmo Park (http://www.myspace.com/maximopark)
Maximo Park would have to be one of my favourite bands, and most people haven't heard of them which makes me sad. I guess some would argue that they don't lend anything new to the Brit Rock movement - but, like everything on this list, there's something about them. Charisma maybe? I love the lead singer's pronounced English accent. I love their catchy hooks. I love their lyrics. *sigh* They should really get more attention.
Like this? Try Signal And Sign and Apply Some Pressure.
9. Monster Hospital by Metric
They're in the same boat as Pony Up! for me. This is the only song by Metric that I know. There's nothing overlly special about the lyrics or the music but I can't stop listening.
10. Death Is The Road To Awe by Clint Mansell & The Kronos Quartet
This is a track from "The Fountain". Maybe you need to see the film to understand just how moving this piece is. Maybe not. God, I'm listening to it now and it's so heartbreaking.
Please comment if you take and let me know what you think!
ETA: ... I say "amazing" a lot :P Also, if any of these links don't work please let me know and I'll fix them up.
